People in history are surrounded by the things they produce. The things that surround people are the product of their compulsion. These things carry and transfer compulsion through the ages. Automation and intensification of production render functionality the ultimate value, transforming humanity into an endless sweatshop. In this way, representations become established that shackle us and make us forget life itself. These representations enforce a white coat wearing ‘culture’ that besieges death, indicating ‘degeneration’ and ‘malfunctions’.
My father’s denial of the utility of things, my mother’s rejection of things, active ignorance, radical oblivion, deconstruction of the code of conduct that is enforced by the utilitarian endorsement of the products of compulsion, all show the way for the future beast, aimlessly wandering and idle, the beast that will restart our reconciliation with the world and our transient nature. Refusing to recognize things (suggests Isidorou) means opposing oneself to compulsion and sweatshops, standing up to the dying ‘culture’ of geriatrics, thanatology, immortalism, genetic engineering, gerontology and the ontology of robots.
Υiannis Isidorou was born in Piraeus. He is a contemporary artist. In most of his work and practices, he is seeking a coherent commentary on the human potential for interpreting the world, and at the same time a critical investigation on the utopia for the world’s change, and the conse- quent dystopian realizations of these changes. Together with Yiannis Grigoriadis, he has established “Salon De Vortex”, a nomadic space for experiments and affiliations between artists, writers, theorists, technicians, workers and anyone else who can contribute to a thorough research on democracy, dominance and decay in Europe today. He lives in Athens.
