France, Europe in 1931. An exhibition of strange human beings. Black people from the colonies are exposed as curious humanoids to the inhabitants of a big city. An absurd image: an old woman dancing, the distorted sound of the “klosar” playing the trumpet – sourdine. A film shot in an amateur way. Nowhere do the mechanisms of domination appear more crudely. The dominance and the majority, impose the standard and the constants. Anything that stands outside of it, acquires the qualities and character that it pre-given to them. Minorities must bear its seal. All the processes of change, all the uncontrollable movements come from this space defined as a margin, as a minority that functions like a virus.
Yioula Chatzigeorgiou was born in Paphos. She lives and works in Greece and Cyprus. She graduated with distinction in Painting and Etching from the Athens School of Fine Arts in 1999. She continued with postgraduate studies at the National and Technical University of Athens. She has presented her work in various solo and group exhibitions, such as:
