The work starts with the language used in the invitation and the theme of the Beijing Biennale in 2019. Its text reflects the happy and future rhetoric of the 1960s translated in other languages, causing confusion in society. The way in which communication technologies are ringing to enhance and improve human conditions gives them a strong presence today – as medicine does. But translation through artificial media presupposes our trust. We must trust that it is accurate, since we know only a few of these languages, just as we must trust medicines.
Konstantin Economou left Greece at the age of three to settle in Sweden, as many Greek families did in the mid 1960s. He works as an academic at Linköping University within an interdisciplinary environment of media and cultural studies, production and art. His academic work centers on interaction in the media: for example, of how young users re-write social media content. In the last ten years he has, together with colleague Erik Berggren, run the independent curatorial project The Museum of Forgetting in Norrköping, Sweden (www.museetfroglomska. se) where the collaboration with international artists has led to several exhibitions and participations in the Art Athina Platforms project, and most recently in the Independent Platforms Project. The Museum of Forgetting always works with issues of society and aims at giving critical perspectives on contemporary dilemmas, as well as exploring new ways of how to address and exhibit difficult issues, such as migration, war or politics.
